VICARTE is located at the campus of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology and therefore for studies such as the new materials for art, glass corrosion, and provenance studies of glass, there is access to sophisticated equipment in collaboration with researchers from the following Departments:
Department of Conservation and Restoration – Micro X-ray fluorescence equipment used for non-destructive elemental analysis of glass artefacts and glazes and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer for glass corrosion studies. Raman Microscopy for structural characterization of glasses and decorative materials.
REQUIMTE - Laboratório Associado – UV-VIS optical spectrometer to identify the origin of colour in glasses; Jovin-Yvon Spex Fluorog 3- 2.2 spectrofluorometer. (For the measurements with the optic-fiber a SPEX Model F-3000 fibere optic adaptor); Microspectrofluorimetry.
CENIMAT (Materials Centre – Laboratório Associado)– Profilometer for diagnostic of glass surfaces and scanning electron microscopy for characterization of glasses and their corrosion phenomena.
Outside the Campus there is access to screen printing facilities in the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Universidade de Lisboa and to a NdYAG laser of the Optoelectronic Group in the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidade de Lisboa.

Still outside the Campus there is access also to some facilities in the Instituto Tecnológico e Nuclear (Nuclear and Technological Institute)
UV/VIS/NIR spectrometer used for the characterization of coloured glasses.
Laboratory to prepare solutions for ICP/MS.
Ion-beam techniques using the Van der Graaf accelerator for chemical characterization of glasses, corrosion studies and thin layer characterization.
Nuclear Reactor for analysis of glass samples by neutron activation analysis.
FT-ICR Mass Spectrometer for the characterization of glass types. |
Some workshops will be held at the Glass Centre of Marinha Grande, CRISFORM, 100 miles north of Lisbon, with excellent facilities for glass blowing and kiln casting. |

Library
A new and quite well appointed library building with excellent conditions has just been inaugurated on our campus. In this library the students have computers and free internet access, a small art gallery space, a cafeteria, and private spaces which can be reserved for individual study. There are also rooms which may be booked for meetings or study groups of up to 12 people, and a well equipped and appointed lecture space. |
