Glass Art and Science: An International Collaboration
Workshop: Introduction to Glassblowing Techniques and the Science of Glass
May 8 – May 16, 2009
The over-arching goal of this program was to promote innovative activities and collaboration between Penn State University and the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in the art and science of glass. The specific objectives of this Workshop were twofold: to teach and practice basic skills in glassblowing and to discuss ongoing research activities in glass art and science. The local organization is made by VICARTE members.
Seven students participated in the glassblowing lessons. They were intended for beginners. No experience was required. There were demonstrations of basic techniques combined with supervised working time in the studio. The Workshop also included pate de verre and kiln-casting lessons and a trip to Marinha Grande. The faculty from Penn State University, Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Universidade de Lisboa presentedselected lectures while the students made presentations about their research projects, whether art, conservation or science.
